Experience the Mühlviertel

Things to do around Reichenthal

Gentle hills, rushing streams and wide forests: there is plenty to discover around Reichenthal – on foot, by mountain bike, road bike or on a relaxed ride across the border into South Bohemia. Our favourite tips:

Hiking

Starts right outside the Gasthof

10-Mill Trail

14 km · approx. 4 h · moderate

The Reichenthal classic: the loop often runs right along rushing streams and past ten historic mills – two of which still generate electricity from water power today. It starts at the flower-decorated millstones on the market square.

Culture & history trail “Vom Herrnsteig zur Höll”

Loop with information boards

Along this trail the landscape around Reichenthal tells its story – from Waldenfels Castle to old border paths. Other lovely loops: the border trail, the miller’s trail and the panoramic forest trail.

Mountain biking

Sterngartl loops

Multi-day loop or in stages · difficult

The mountain-bike area of the Sterngartl-Gusental region: forest roads and trails through the woods of the Mühlviertel highlands with many entry points. If you prefer something shorter, there are plenty of day loops around Reichenthal.

Cycling

By bike to Vyšší Brod

Cross-border cycle path · family-friendly

Cycle across the historic border crossing between Stiftung (Reichenthal) and Konrátov to Vyšší Brod with its famous Cistercian monastery – and on into the South Bohemian cycle network along the Vltava. At the border there is a cycle station where you can charge e-bikes.

Road cycling

Road cycling in the Mühlviertel

Hilly · quiet back roads

The hilly highlands are a paradise for road cyclists: quiet roads, traditional stone farmhouses and wide views as far as the Bohemian Forest. The tours of Mühlviertel tourism take you over the region’s finest climbs.

Culture & history

Mill village open-air museum

Hayrl 19, Reichenthal

History comes alive in the mill and museum village: the working Herrenmühle and Hausmühle, a horse gin, a Venetian saw, a traditional Mühlviertel farmstead showing how linen was made from flax, and a clock museum with over 300 clocks.

Waldenfels Castle

Concerts & theatre at the castle

Reichenthal’s history is closely linked to Waldenfels Castle, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Today it hosts concerts and theatre performances. The baroque parish church on the market square is also well worth a visit.
